Matariki Rising Southside is an event that celebrates the Maaori New Year, te tau hou Maaori. It places emphasis on cultural awareness, remembrance, understanding, revitalization, and preservation of Maaori culture, language, practices, and traditions. Matariki serves as a cultural anchor and a significant event that enables the coordination of cultural activities and initiatives, thus giving rise to Matariki Rising Southside. Our committee firmly believes that by providing a platform that celebrates and commemorates Matariki, Maaori communities can unite and share their knowledge, stories, and customs with both Maaori and non-Maaori communities, thereby contributing to a culturally diverse and understanding Aotearoa. This exchange and mutual learning between cultures helps break down barriers, foster understanding, and build a more inclusive society.
