‘Ngaa Paki o Matariki’ is an empowering celebration of Matariki for Hamilton City and the surrounding areas of Tainui rohe. The festival leverages the two largest kaupapa Māori events for Tainui rangatahi on the biennial calendar.
Every two years, the Tainui Secondary Schools Manu Kōrero and Kapa Haka Competitions attract over 10,000 orators, performers and live spectators. Hundreds of thousands more are captured via the Tainui Live broadcasts on radio and livestream.
Combined with an exhibition of toi Māori created by rangatahi, and an inspiring hub of stalls and exhibitions, this festival will become the largest singular celebratory event of Matariki in the region.
Ngaa Paki o Matariki 2023 will be held at Claudelands Event Centre, Thursday 13 July – Friday 14 July and is expected to draw the greatest number of participants and audiences ever seen at these kaupapa.
40 orators, 14 kapa haka teams, 20 artists and 40 stallholders/exhibitionists are expected to form the basis of our celebration of reo, tikanga, and art and dance, under the mantle of Matariki.
